There comes a time
without fail
when passions subside
and stagnate.
Self-preservation
as a rule
grows a protective layer
of skin across the heart
that callouses over time.
Yet a simple notion,
a well-placed sentiment
can re-open what was
& what should always be.
The opposite of love
is indifference.
