They put me at the wheel,
big mistake, and let me guide
them to the shore, but we
never made it that far, my
hands spinning, the wind
invisible and unpredictable,
going in endless circles on
the water, dizzying, maddening,
and worst of all shameful.

If I could take your world
on my shoulders, bear all
unkindness for you, I might
try, if my muscles were
broad enough, bones strong
enough

If I could hold up the world
for a few more minutes,
I would at least think about it,
if nothing else for your sake.

Dash the rain to the side
of our windows, away from our
houses, we run inside

as if we can escape the fall
of order from the sky, as if
we are on this earth to survive

Inside, we dry off together
listening to the sound of each
other breathing.
